For background on how linked-device technology works, see WhatsApp Scanned Devices.
Fix 1: 0 of 4 devices linked
What it means: The dashboard or app shows "0 of 4 devices linked" even after you scanned the QR code.
Cause: The scan didn't complete properly. Usually the QR code expired between generation and scan.
Fix:
- Refresh the QR code on the new device.
- Scan within 60 seconds — QR codes expire after that.
- If it still shows 0, log out of all other linked devices first and try again.
Fix 2: Maximum number of devices is connected
What it means: WhatsApp caps companion devices at 4. You've hit the limit.
Fix:
- Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
- Go to Settings → Linked Devices.
- Tap any device you no longer use.
- Tap Log Out.
- Try linking your new device again.
If you're an agency managing multiple clients, the better fix is one WhatsApp number per client account. Trying to manage 5+ clients on a single number will keep tripping this limit.
Fix 3: QR code expired
What it means: You took longer than 60 seconds to scan the QR code.
Fix:
- On the new device, click "Refresh QR" or "Generate new QR".
- Scan within 60 seconds.
- If your phone's camera is slow to focus, try moving to better lighting.
Fix 4: Phone not connected
What it means: Your primary phone has been offline for more than 14 days, or WhatsApp on your phone has been uninstalled.
Fix:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Connect to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
- Open WhatsApp at least once and let it sync.
- Your linked devices should reconnect within a few minutes.
If you uninstalled WhatsApp on your phone, all linked devices are automatically logged out. You'll need to re-link each one.
Fix 5: Could not link device
What it means: The link request failed, usually due to network or WhatsApp server issues.
Fix:
- Check status.whatsapp.com for known outages.
- Switch networks (Wi-Fi → mobile data, or vice versa).
- Disable VPN if you're using one — WhatsApp sometimes blocks VPN IPs.
- Retry the scan.
Fix 6: This device is no longer linked
What it means: Another device or your phone has forcibly logged out this device.
Cause: Most commonly, you logged out from your phone's Linked Devices screen, or another linked device was logged out which triggered a cascade.
Fix:
- Generate a fresh QR code.
- Scan from your phone again.
Fix 7: WhatsApp Web keeps disconnecting
What it means: Your linked device disconnects repeatedly, often within minutes.
Cause: Usually network instability on either your phone or the device.
Fix:
- Check both devices' internet connections are stable.
- Restart your phone and the device.
- Update WhatsApp on your phone to the latest version.
- Update the device's WhatsApp client (Web browser, Desktop app, third-party tool).
- If the issue is with a third-party tool specifically, check the tool's status page.
If Walytic is the disconnecting device, check status.walytic.com and our help center for known issues.
When to escalate to support
If none of the above fixes work, escalate:
- For Walytic: chat support in the dashboard, or email support@walytic.com
- For WhatsApp itself: there's no direct support — your best path is the WhatsApp Help Center forums
When you escalate, have ready:
- Your phone model and OS version
- WhatsApp version
- The exact error message (screenshot if possible)
- What you've already tried
Preventive checklist
To avoid most linked-device errors:
- Keep WhatsApp updated on your phone.
- Don't let your phone go offline for 14+ days.
- Periodically check your Linked Devices list and log out of ones you don't use.
- Use a stable internet connection on both your phone and the linked device.
- Don't run multiple automation tools on the same number — one slot is precious.
